Arsenal are on the lookout for a new No.2 after making a ‘mistake’ by selling Emi Martinez, talkSPORT understands.
Martinez became a star towards the back end of last season which saw the Gunners win the FA Cup with Bernd Leno nursing a knee injury.
The club authorised the sale of the Argentine keeper to Aston Villa and signed Alex Runarsson in his place.
And talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook suggested Mikel Arteta has realised Runarsson ‘isn’t up to the job’ and is thinking of putting him on loan just FOUR months after he signed.
Crook added that Arteta is a fan of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, while also suggesting out-of-favour Brighton man Mat Ryan would make a good option as a Gunners No.2.
“Arsenal let Emi Martinez go to Aston Villa at the start of the season and it doesn’t look the wisest of moves now,” Crook told talkSPORT.
“Alex Runarsson who came in to replace him as back-up to Bernd Leno just isn’t up to the job, and I think Mikel Arteta has realised that after his error-strewn performance against Man City in the Carabao Cup.
“They’re willing to let go out on loan, but of course they will need to bring in some kind of replacement.
“I know Mikel Arteta remains a fan of David Raya at Brentford, but I’ll be surprised if they let him go in this window – possibly that could happen in the summer.
